Fishing Report March 2006

2006 is going to be a great year for striper fishing! The trend of releasing bigger fish has really spread around and we're already seeing the benefit. Alot of bigger fish have been showing up. Man, does it excite me about thinking about the near future where an average striper will be 13-15 pounds.

I always start my reports out with the following........Just want to say- since the water has cooled down, RELEASE THOSE BIGGER FISH IF YOU CAN. We need to get alot more 30-40 pounders and they ain't gonna make it if they're in a frying pan. Wait 'till summer to keep these fish, let 'em eat and get fat now, while they can. We finally got our bait situation back to where it needs to be and the stripers are getting fat like they're supposed to be.

March 1-4: The fish are trying to move shallow from their deep winter spots, but we've had some very sporadic weather with 70 degree days followed by 30 degree days. With these changing weather patterns, the fish are really mixed up. If we get some steady weather, there will be a phenomenal march bite. The past 4 days have either been really good or really bad and I don't have any explanation for the inconsistency, except for the weather. We're catching fish in 5 feet of water and we're catching fish 60 feet deep on the same day, so as you can see the fish are trying to come shallow, but there's a lot that are still deep. The shallow bite should be here in full force any day now.

busting stripers in March!

What does Homer Simpson say? ....DOH! (Yup, that's a busted 111)

March 10-12 Pretty sloooow weekend. Bright skies, pleasure boaters everywhere, debris-ridden creeks. Had great clients, but regretfully the fish just wouldn't feed like they have been. The bite should be here anyday now. The water temps are 50-53 which are prime for great shallow-fishing.

Planer board action is finally here:

The fish are gettin' fat.

March 16-19 About the same report for all of these days. Cloudy days have been much better than the bright and sunny days. Most of these fish were caught from alewives on planers. Bucktails/flukes did well on certain days. We have had some really good days lately and it should continue since the water temps are perfect. All fish released

March 24 - What a perfect day! Calm and Cloudy and not many boats. The fish turned on at 7:30am and NEVER stopped biting the whole day. This was one of the best days we've had in awhile for size and we also caught alot. Most of these fish came off of planers and long freelined alewives. These are only a couple of the fish that we caught.
ALL FISH RELEASED

Here's an 18 pounder that hit a light action rod with 15lb test. Talk about a serious battle.

Here's a 17lber that hit a freelined alewife

These fish ain't on Jenny Craig....

March 24, I had 2 trips today and the morning trip went really well until the sun got high. We picked up some really nice stripers at first light and after the sun got up, we only picked up 2 more on downlines and floats. The afternoon trip was a little slow. I had some people from The Washington Post come down for a story and it was cold and windy. After we picked up the first fish, we called it a day.

March 27 We had a great bite all morning. Long freelined planers with Alewives paid the bills. Pretty calm today and it was a blast.

March 31rst- Finished up the month with a bang! A 19 pound, 36 inch striper caught by this young man. It was an awesome sight to see the planer board take off 100mph the wrong way! The 19 pounder was released along with the other fish.
